The curriculum, simply speaking, is made up of a variety of experiences in mathematics, English language, environmental studies, religious and moral education, art, music, drama and mime and physical education.  These areas of work very often overlap with each other in the day-to-day activities experienced by the children.

In recent years a great deal of attention has been focused on what all schools in Scotland are teaching, and what the children are learning. This is largely due to the introduction of Government documents on a range of curricular matters, commonly known as “5-14” Guidelines. This should not be confused with the National Curriculum innovations introduced in England and Wales.

As Education Authority for this region, Highland Council has issued to all schools a “timetable for action” in relation to the many curriculum documents which are arriving in its schools.  The Council has now advised that a review of progress made to date will be undertaken in its schools.  In the meantime, as with most other schools in the locality, we are currently reviewing the setting of targets for reading, writing, maths and attendance.  The school has produced its ninth yearly plan for review and action (known as the ‘School Development Plan’) designed to help us prioritise and pace these changes.

Over the next few sessions Auldearn will continue to revise its current policies. Parent will be informed through monthly newsletters when each new policy has been reviewed, agreed and adopted by staff. Eventually the school will have written draft policies for all aspects, and a summary of each, over the years will become part of this brochure. Parents should therefore retain this document to allow future updates to be added.

The following general outlines should give parents some idea of the objectives in mind for the main areas of schoolwork.
